Introduction

Nictated helps patients communicate with just a blink. From a few of the statistics below, vast number of patients rely heavily on personal nursing staff who have to be by the patient's side all the time. With technology from Nictated, patients are now independent and just need to blink when they need to communicate. For instance, a single blink could be associated with a message requesting for water. Two blinks could be associated with a distress signal. The blinks can also be used to control various user interfaces or household utilities. Algorithms developed by Nicated help differentiate between natural blinks and forced blinks.

ALS

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, is a disease of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that control voluntary muscle movement. Patients suffering from ALS lose their ablility to contorl their muscles. Every 90 minutes someone is diagnosed with ALS. The ALS Therpay Development Institute(TDI) estimates that there are at least 450,000 cases of ALS worldwide.

Lock-in syndrome

Locked-in syndrome is a rare neurological disorder in which there is complete paralysis of all voluntary muscles except for the ones that control the movements of the eyes. Individuals with locked-in syndrome are conscious and awake, but have no ability to produce movements (outside of eye movement) or to speak. There are at least a million stroke and LIS patients worlwide.

The population growth of people in their 80's and above is expected to triple between 2015 and 2050. The global population of the “oldest old”—people aged 80 and older—is expected to more than triple between 2015 and 2050, growing from 126.5 million to 446.6 million. The oldest old population in some Asian and Latin American countries is predicted to quadruple by 2050.

Our Technique

At Nictated, we use blinks to help people communicate. The reason people can blink despite being paralysed or being a patient of ALS etc is that the eyes are directly connected to the facial nerves and not the spinal cord.
